Mantell Syndicate FAQs

"Hey. Anyone ever tell you you ask too many questions? A little friendly advice. Folks can get a whole heap o' nervous when strangers show up asking too many questions. It's a good way to get yourself a personal ventilation system in the middle of your chest, courtesy of the nearest sidearm."

Normally the Syndicate doesn't care for people nosing around asking a lot of questions, but in this case, we'll make an exception.  Below you'll find many of our frequently asked questions along with a short, but hopefully enlightening answers. if you don't find quite what you're looking for there, feel free to post a question in our shoutbox on the home page or send a private message to one of our moderators (Baraslan, Demophon, Jeos Dinas, or Ko). If you'd rather just ask a question without registering a user on the site, then feel free to use our contact form.

What is the Mantell Syndicate?

The Mantell Syndicate is a role-play (RP) guild built for the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO.  It operates on the 'Lord Adraas' RP-PvE Server. It's a guild primarily for players that think "Han Solo" was as exciting a character (or more so) than 'Luke Skywalker'.  It is a 'smugglers' "independent shipping contractor's" guild.  It is our goal to build a strong core of Star Wars RP enthusiasts with character histories and relationships that develop both in game as well as through our forum RP.  For more information, please visit our About Us section or speak with a Mantell Syndicate representative directly.

What server are you on?

We operate out of the 'Lord Adraas' RP-PvE server.  It is located on the east coast of the United States.

Are you Republic or Empire aligned?

The Syndicate's relationship with the Republic on Ord Mantell and across the galaxy is a carefully designed and orchestrated series of 'understandings' and 'arrangements' made with key government officials and employees. Were the Empire to gain complete control, this understanding would be shattered and have to be rebuilt. This would not only be very costly (the Sith are often more expensive to make these kind of 'arrangements' with) but also very time consuming.  So, it is in the best interests of the Syndicate that the Republic government stay in power and until such an arrangement proves to be less profitable for them, "Corellian Transports and Exports" will remain "staunch supporters" of the Republic.

Not to mention, when the Republic catches a smuggler or a criminal, they are arrested and after a trial and a sentencing, they are incarcerated for their crimes.  The legal process can sometimes be lengthy and leaves plenty of time for evidence to go 'missing' or palms to be greased, or prisoners to be 'liberated'.  The Empire, on the other hand, often has a more 'efficient' and quick response to smugglers they catch that usually involves little to no paperwork and the criminal being summarily executed.  One more reason that the Republic currently serves the Syndicate's best interests.

What classes do you accept?

The Syndicate is currently open to the Smuggler and Trooper classes (unless Bioware ever allows cross-faction classes in the same guild, at which point we would accept Bounty Hunters and a Infiltrators as well).   We are not currently accepting and force-using characters with limited exception (see FAQ on allowing Jedi or Sith). The Syndicate will perform all manner of jobs if the price is right and so having employees or contractors with a wide range of skills is beneficial to them. Now, since the guild will be Republic aligned - this creates a built-in game-mechanic limitation to whom we can accept.

So you don't accept Jedi/Sith at all?

Well, Jedi would probably take issue with some of our 'business practices' and Sith would probably think our goals too small, petty and materialistic to be bothered with.  So I would imagine a fully dedicated member of either sect wouldn't want to be a member of The Mantell Syndicate.   Currently we are not accepting any of the force-using classes (i.e. Jedi Knight or Jedi Consular).  We do have a contingency that would allow a limited number of force-sensitive characters as long as they are willing to work for advancement of the Syndicate and not bogged down with dedication to certain goals or ideas that would be counter to the Syndicate's success. However, this option will only be given to longstanding members of the guild who have proved their RPing skill, understanding and respect for the Guild's lore, and active dedication to the Syndicate.

What are your rules/policies?

We have two sectons on rules and policies, one for 'out of character' and one for 'in character'.  You can find those here:

What time zone/region is your guild in?

Many of our players come from the United States, so the most common time zones you are likely to see are Eastern Standard, Central, Mountain, and Pacific (GMT -4 through -7). However we are certainly open to any region or time zone that would like to join us.  Our server, 'Lord Adraas', is an east coast server.

How much PvP, PvE, crafting, etc will you do?

Our guild will strive to enjoy all aspects of the game and enjoy it fully. That means we will embrace PvP, PvE, crafting, and end-game content. The difference is we will be doing it through a role-playing filter - so as much as game mechanics reasonably allow- we will approach all these things in character.

What is forum RP?

Forum Role Play (FRP) is multiple people telling a story using a forum thread as their medium.  It is similar to that classic game where one person would start a story and after a minute or so, pass the story onto someone else, then that person would pass the story along and son on and so forth.  Each piece of the story that concerns your character is written in a post in a forum thread.  Little by little a story emerges from all the connected posts.  Multiple threads can all contain different stories.  The Syndicate will sometimes provide 'missions' to members which are designed to be story starters and a framework around which your adventure happens.  Missions are assigned to you by the Office of Syndicate Resources.  You can read more about this in our application process or our forum rules.

Do you offer assassinations / bounty hunting?

The Syndicate doesn't like to get its hands bloody any more than necessary. Have they ever been involved with something that lead to the deaths of key individuals? Yes. But they aren't really a group of 'assassins'. They tend to focus more on smuggling, espionage, sabotage, acquisitions, etc. That's not to say that people don't get hurt on their missions. Someone is shooting at us? We're not squeamish about firing back. Now, as for collecting bounties, the Syndicate has been known to drag in some wanted individuals for the right price, but if the job is "go kill this individual", the Syndicate is likely to pass (unless the money is just too good). Again - that's not to say we won't participate in PvP or get in situations where deadly force is necessary and appropriate - it just means we don't specialize in assassinations.

Do you have an age restriction?

We are a mature RP guild and will, from time to time be involved in RP that contains more mature/adult themes (not necessarily the 'xxx' kind of 'adult').  Because of this, we are looking for members who are at least 18 or older.  This also helps put our own membership at greater ease that they are not RPing mature situations with a minor.  Because this is the Internet and we have no way of ultimately confirming you are the age you are, we use the honor system, trusting our members and/or applicants to be truthful concerning their age when applying.  Should we find out in some fashion later that this information was falsified and a member does not meet the minimum age requirements, it can be grounds for immediate ejection from the guild.

How do I join?

Anyone who would like may contact the Syndicate to try and join up.  The process is outlined on our application page but includes submission of a fully fleshed out character idea that must first be approved followed by a test 'mission' which will be an introductory short story, the core details of which we will provide to you.
